According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May, 2010 locksmiths in the United States earned a mean annual wage of $37,550. They define locksmiths as individuals who repair and open locks; make keys; change locks and safe combinations; and install and repair safes. Locksmiths can work under someone, or better yet, you can set up your own business and work for yourself. Because you will work for yourself, you can work as much as you like, and earn much more than you otherwise could have.
If you are interested in becoming a locksmith, you may need to procure a professional locksmith license in the state you live in addition to obtaining a business license to do business in your jurisdiction.
In addition to licensing, it may also behoove you to find specialized locksmith training to further your education and increase your odds of getting more business and making more money. Every state has a department of taxation as well as a secretary of state, among other bureaucracies, that can answer questions you may have regarding licensing and training to become a locksmith.
A career as a locksmith can be incredibly rewarding. Imagine making every single customer worship you for getting their locked keys out of their car, or allowing them access to their home after they forgot the new alarm code. You’ll have customers throwing compliments out left and right, which is something that very rarely happens in this day and age.
The barriers to entry in this profession are very low, and that is something that is subject to change. Many states have pending legislation that supports the regulation and professional certification of locksmiths doing business in those states. If you were going to enter into this career, now would be the time to do so. It will only become harder and more expensive to become a locksmith once every state has specific regulations in place.
